“That’s it? That’s all we have on him?”

Eric ground his teeth in frustration as he stared out at the small group Tom had assembled. Nothing they had presented to him was damning enough to really do any damage to the sitting mayor’s campaign. Most of it was hearsay at best that only highlighted what a snake and horrible leader Powers was. And none of that was new or newsworthy.

“There are rumors that his wife’s a closet alcoholic,” one of the volunteers offered.

Someone scoffed. “Being married to that guy, who could blame her.”

“Well, there was that one time Suzanne Powers was caught stealing from the church collection plate when she was in high school. Rumor has it, she had been doing it for years.”

“No one cares about some spoiled teenager stealing from the church,” Tom snapped. “We’re looking for earth shattering dirt, so if you don’t have anything that will make front page news, then get back to the phones and start reminding folks why Eric Benson is still the right choice for mayor.”

The five volunteers glanced around the table then glanced back at him. One by one, they each rose from the table.

“Sorry, Eric,” a few of them murmured as they filed out of the small meeting room.

Eric leaned back in his seat and blew a breath out in defeat. He had hoped to gain something that he could use to hurt the mayor, both personally and professionally. The fact that they hadn’t been able to dig up anything was disappointing and infuriating.

When the last of the volunteers left, Eric turned to his campaign manager. “Do you really think making cold calls tonight is a good idea? Shouldn’t we let some of this noise die down?”

“We make calls every day,” Tom said. “We shouldn’t change our routine because of this hiccup. A line about how to address this situation regarding your grandfather has been added to the script, but I think the best course of action is to stay the course until we can formally address it.”

“All right. Have Maggie order some pizzas for the group. They’ve earned it.”

Eric headed back to his office, his mind already centered on how he was going to address these allegations. He would need to draft a statement and soon yet for the life of him he didn’t know where to begin.

A knock came to his door and he was grateful for the interruption.

“Come in.”

He was surprised to find a smiling Tom entering his office, followed by a nervous Maggie.

“Eric, I think we found our story,” Tom ushered Maggie to the seat in front of his desk, then said encouragingly, “Go on. Tell him.”

The nervous woman glanced at Tom before turning to him. “Sophia Powers had an abortion.”

Eric stared at the woman, stunned by the news she had just blurted out. “You mean little Sophie? His youngest.”

“Technically, she’s nineteen and legal,” Tom corrected, “But it’ll still piss off a lot of his supporters when they find out about this.”

“How do you know this isn’t just gossip?”

“Because the baby was AJ’s,” Maggie said.
